4 Ways You’re Self-Sabotaging

Self-sabotage is a vicious cycle that we can easily get stuck in if we aren’t mindful of our thoughts and how we are managing our time. But a lot of times, we aren’t even conscious of the fact that we are thwarting our own efforts! Here are some signs that you may be caught in a cycle of self-sabotage:

1. Not sticking to a schedule or routine.

Switching from task to task without a clear focus is one of the ways we waste valuable time. If you don’t have a few realistic tasks outlined for each day and a few grounding practices built into your day, that’s the perfect recipe for overwhelm.

2. Mindlessly scrolling social media and binge watching TV.

It is so hard not to doom scroll these days, and mindlessly scrolling is one of the ways that a lot of us cope and forget about our problems even temporarily. At the same time, if you might notice that you don’t feel good about the amount of time you spend on social media or the content you consume, you may reconsider how you engage with these apps!

3. Self-loathing and negative self-talk.

Constantly telling yourself that you “don’t have any discipline” or you “don’t have enough willpower” feeds a negative cycle and keeps you stuck. For the record, I doubt that you’re lazy and don’t have any discipline. My guess is that you’re overwhelmed and lacking systems that will help you be more resourceful.

4. Overthinking (and over planning).

Thinking about your goals for years, making to-do lists, and writing out tasks in a planner are useless if you don’t follow through. Planning and thinking about our goals makes us feel like we are moving forward, but they really waste our time and distract us if there is no action behind these goals, plans, and wishes.
